Investment companies have simultaneously been expanding their portfolios and consolidating or closing newspapers. In some states, investment companies merged or closed papers, reducing their footprint in the state. In others, they maintained or expanded their portfolio, but centralized production. A few states even remained relatively unchanged. The following table lists the number of investment-company-owned newspapers by state, according to our 2016 database.
